Stuck up

I saluteall who make their own beautiful cards ,I bought card blanks and double sided tape , I had plenty of fabric . The problem was the double sided tape . It stuck everywhere but in the precise place it needed to be . Iwill not throw it away , if I cut myself it will seal and join the cut together , save me going to A & E .

I bought 6 of these plates for £10 from Age Concern charity shop . I love red transfer ware , the design is Historic America , view of Boston , Massachusetts .
Bluebell and myself were having a conversation , I cannot remember what is was about ,bluebell said " they are a transient population" . My mind went blank I was like a child that had heard a new word . I couldn,t remember hearing the expression before .

Last night

Last night I aired my anger on my blog about a social injustice . I listened to the 6 o/clock news again tonight , there was a reference about this illegal immigrant again . It was such a quick flash reference , I didn,t have time to get the implication .
I fervently hope this issue is not allowed to die down . The decision to let him stay is so very very wrong . I am angry again tonight .

So Angry

I have just been listening to the 6 o/clock news on BBC . I,m so angry an illegal immigrant who ran over a 12 year old girl and left her to die under the wheels of the car he was driving , he ran away and left her there .has been allowed to stay in this country . It seems there are other issues with this man , other offences . It said it would be against his human rights to be sent back from whence he came . What is happening in our beloved England . I want to weep .

Oh dear!!

One of those days so much to do but I seem to be going backwards .
The ice on my fish pond has almost thawed so I decided to top up the water and sort out the pump . It gave up when the ice reached about 6 inches . I went into the garage to switch on and realised I hadn,t put the spray fitting in the right position . foolish that I am ,!!! I stood at the pond to adjust it , the outcome? one very wet woman who had been in the shower only 1/2 hour earlier was a very wet cold woman smelling of fish pond water .
Oh well ! worse things happening elsewhere .

Bargain

Right place, right time .
Bluebell and myself went to the antique centre yesterday . Before browsing we decided coffee was a must . While queuing we gave the food the once over , this place has won awards for their pies !!! so 11.15 a,m coffee turned into early lunch . Cornish pasty and chips . The pasty ? absolutely cram ,bang full of meat and easy on the veg . We had one between us and the chips .cordon bleu. Two well stuffed and satisfied browsers then carried on with the looking around .
This beautiful trug cost me just a £1 .

ON BALANCE

Some things good , some things not so good .
1---I had my flu jab today , it,s o,k but itchy
2---I called to see bluebell on the way home from the clinic , she had made a lovely sponge cake for me with buttercream and raspberry jam
They are the good bits of the day
3--- my conservatory door , something has happened to it , possibly the weather , it closes with coaxing but will not lock
4---I have a burst pipe , I phoned bluebell she came with her husband Tony to turn the water off . I would not have had any idea where to do it . The pipe to the washing machine has been frozen for days .
5-- the fish pond is now almost just ice , I have peered intently , I think the fish are still moving in what water there is left , there is a hole in the ice . I keep putting a little water in from the tap but I know that is not good .
I realise my problems are small and rather insignificant to what many are suffering . Tomorrow is another day .

Birds without feathers !! crochet

I,m showing the little birds I have crochet . I saw these birds on a site called Attic 24 . It did say there is a pattern you can print off but I could not locate it but is quite easy to do if you have a little know how with a crochet hook .
It is still so cold here in the east midlands , I stepped outside about 4.30 to fetch two pairs of jeans off the washing line , left the conservatory door open, it could not have been more than 3 minutes and the lock froze . I shall be going to bed tonight with that door not secured .
I,m sitting around too much during this cold spell , my waistband feels tight .

Dust 11

Up very early this morning , 5 a,m . by 6 a,m ironing done , bt 7 floors swept and washed .

The reason for this early start?
1, Bluebell admired this coffee pot , a present from a neighbour . running her finger along the shelf , " there,s dust here " she said .

2, Last night on casting my eyes upwards I noticed cobwebs , It appears spiders are insulating their corners this cold spell . I soon put a stop to that .

My bedroom is like Santa's grotto , parcels everywhere , Roll on christmas lets see space again .

My Version

I just read a blog by Stephanie Newman posted minutes ago showing her new design for a quilt .
In patchwork and quilting there is very little that is new .
Here is my quilt made 1997 . At present it is one of my favourites ,it is on the back of a chair in my conservatory. It was my own design .

Where the background snow?

Where is the background snow for the blogs ? I have plenty of thr real stuff outside .
This is my fish pond at present

I don,t care what the weather men say

At present my litte bit of the world is clean and fresh.

Now to be realistic I,m sorry for people that have no heating (my outside pipe from the boiler froze 3 times last year at the coldest time possible but that has been rearranged) I feel for people going to work and waiting for buses ) I don,t have much patience for those who don,t keep well stocked cupboards . Basics like red beans, chick peas , tin tomatoes . rice and bulgar wheat are excellent standbys and for the freezer , mince and sausage . I,m lucky my milk is delivered to my door, but I have been told you can freeze milk , dosen,t the top pop off when it freezes?

I found I have no bread flour but I,ll get by with making pizza dough or flat bread

Reading a magazine my pharmacist gave to me on Saturday morning it said dairy food for winter . I don,t know about that , I think it can feel cloggy in the throat and chest but it said cheese is good , that suits me fine , cheese on toast , comfort food , goody !!

Call me irresponsible

Today I have the energy of two people , perhaps it,s due to playing some of my favourite cds and singing along , lets face it music is so uplifting .
My lunch is almost cooked . it,s a roast dnner with bread and butter pudding to follow , mmmmm, shall I have cream or creme anglaise , decisions ,decisions .!! I will not have any energy when I have eat my lunch , I,ll most likely fall asleep.

These are 4 more stockings to be filled . I purchased a panel with 2 stockings on for £1.25 from the fabric guild . I put holly fabric on the backs so that made 4 stockings .

This is my little fish pond frozen over again . I coverered part of it with ply hoping it would shelter my fish a little . I really don,t know how they survive . Goodness knows where the birds are ,they are not visiting my bird station .

I did have some unidentifiable paw prints on my snow covered patio . I wonder what lurks out there when it,s dark .

Who stole the cakes ?

These are the cakes I knitted and crochet for the children . They didn,t load on my blog the previous time

Beautiful Flowers & cup cakes

It is even more Brrrrr today because the frost didn,t clear from yesterday, I think we are entering the second ice age , but nevertheless bluebell and myself have been out browsing and doing a little shopping therapy . We also did quite a bit of laughing . It,s good for the soul .
We went to Dunelm and spent a few pieces of eight . Me! white silk flowers for a new arrangement. Some pretty turquoise baubles for my tree , Umm, and some christmas cards and while in there we spotted just the right weight of batting for machine quilting. We have been trying to buy thin batting for a long time . After consultation , deliberation and a few other factors we decided we would have all that was on the roll . 99p a yard , there was 46 yards on the roll . We will not be begging quilt group leaders for just a bit more . No one would tell us where we could buy a roll of batting
I came home to these beautiful flowers on my doorstep , they were a gift from http://Angelaoftracingrainbows.com ,Angela had read on bluebells blog that my 97 year old Mum died last Saturday. Thank you Angela, you lifted my spirits wit your kindness , and such a pretty card too .
My mum had a good life , hard at times , there were six of us children . Me being the eldest . then a sister 5 years younger ,then a brother 9 years younger than me ,then my Dad came home from the war and 3 more children were quickly added to the family .
My mum was bright and cheerful until about a week before she died . She was a credit to us , the centre pivot to our family She will be sadly missed for a long time .
I said I would put the cakes I have been knitting and crocheting , they are for Ellie and River to play tea parties with , they are learning to identify colours so the toppings will help , I,ll have one with pink on the top please Ellie

Brrrrrrrrr

Yes Brrrrrrrrrr is the languidge we are speaking here in the English midlands . extra cold, we don't usually have it so cold at this time of the year.
I,m beginning to look forward to christmas . I shall be spending it with my family in Bristol . there are young children 3 years and 2 years old so it will be exciting
I have made 4 more christmas stockings and I,ve been busy crocheting cup cakes for the children to play tea parties . Anyone wishing to crochet cup cakes there are free patterns on the internet and if you put --Jean Greenhowe -- on your google bar she has wonderful free patterns for all kinds of knitted small items. I am putting different colour icings on the cup cakes , Ellie is learning colours . I,ll put a picture on tomorrow .
Gooseberry patch has put free wallpaper on their site , I have used one of their pictures for my header . Lovely and seasonal
Bluebell and myself had a little tour of the charity shops this afternoon . I bought 2 christmas plates , 2 pink transfer ware cereal dishes , I love pink transfer stuff . Bluebell looks for more up market china like chintz ,nothing more to blog but I,ll make a note to put pics on tomorrow

If you like CAT'S or poetry please read

This beautiful black cat does not belong to me but before his ? owners moved he was a frequent daily visitor . He snoozed on my bed , followed me about but never begged or wanted food. I really miss him.
Several years ago I used to write a lot of poetry . I,m going to put on my blog a poem I wrote about 2 cats while living in Cyprus . Lot,s of cats there.
Whisky is a cat belonging to a friend , Manos and Chloe are fictional
THE CYPRUS CONNECTION APRIL 1995
Today I met Whisky's cousin Manos
he lives in a village close to Paphos
Manos has a girlfriend her name is Chloe
her fur is thick , white and snowy
her breed is persian ,she's aloof and true
she has eyes only for Manos , no other will do .
They dine on fish , and saucers of ouzo ,and Chloe dreams about her trousseau
her dowry's a basket with a feather bed
the basket is wicker and painted red
Sometimes they sit on a fence and sing ,till plates crashing around them drown out the din .
Manos lives at the Hotel Cleree where English visitors sit and sip tea
The owner of Chloe is a man of renown
a very distinguished man in the town
He's quite fond of Manos as a prospective groom , serenading his Chloe under the moon
Will they have kittens ? who can say, that tale will be told another day .
There is a bit more to this ,keep a lookout,

I,m Upset or do my eyes deceive me

I purchased some gifts for my friends. payed for the postage , then payed extra postage because the package was coming from America , all done through paypal .
The post office this end would not release the package until I payed £12.63 ,which is what I payed for the original postage .
I sent a copy of this photo to the seller showing there was no postage payed .I was sent an email with underlining saying the postage had been payed and a copy of a receipt showing it so .
I felt the matter should be pursued by the seller but I very much doubt it. It means I have payed £25 26p in postage .
When sending gifts abroad which I do quite often I have never, never payed this much postage before .

I made a start

I made this bag using a pattern and fabric I purchased from a stall at the quilt fair . The stall was called
Out Of Africa . The pouch I shall use for my camera or spectacles .
Last week I felt so tired but today ? just the opposite , boundless energy. Isn,t it wonderful when you feel well .

How can I win ?

I fancied crumpets , pikelets , call them what you will for my breakfast so off I go to the shop . They were priced 88p . buy one get one free . All well and good but it means my freezer is always full of these bargains !!!and living alone I will not eat 12 pikelets , 2 today , 2 tomorrow perhaps , the other 2 will stare at me making me feel wasteful if I don,t eat them . How can a one person household get round this problem , I seem to waste more than I should .

A day in the life of a sewing Junkie ,and embroidering the truth a little

We had a wonderful day from meeting at my home to arriving back at my home . From 8 o,clock in the morning when we met , to 6 in the evening arriving back , I,m referring to our day at the Malvern quilt show .

I will just speak for myself on purchases . I did not buy fat quarters or yardage .
I did buy bag patterns
I did buy 2 small wall quilt kits (pattern and fabric included)
A pattern with a dvd included and something that is better than heat and bond . The pattern and dvd were a combined price of £4.50 so no great spend there
Some 50p packets of wool roving for a special project
Several packs of lace ,
2 fabrication magazines

I hope to have several days creating next week .

I will say no more except in my shopping next week I will only need to purchase rice , I have plenty of store cupboard food and my 2 freezers are full . Potatoes and veg,. and salad stuff ,well enough .

Day Out

Tomorrow is a big day in the year for three friends , bluebell , Elaine and myself . This big day occurs twice a year . We're off to the Malvern quilt show .

We have vowed no more fabric !! umm, um .

We are quietly ashamed of our huge stash , the money we have invested in our hobby , the untidy mess on the shelves . Fabric we have bought in a weak moment with no thought of what we shall use it for . Well thats not quite true . We had ideas at the time of purchase how that piece of orange would give a wonderful zing to a quilt , the red and silver that would make a beautiful scarf for the fire mantle at christmas and the green and gold for a fresh tree skirt , well thats three pieces accounted for .

Apart from the guilty conscience of the fabric stash we shall have a wonderful day . On the journey we shall laugh and giggle our cares away , suck sweeties ,recall happy times past and on the way home soberly discuss the quilts at the show.

Is Anybody There?

The blocks I am showing are from the blog of Bunny Hill , she has been posting the patterns since the beginning of the year . These were the 1st 4 blocks , I completed these this week . It will be my christmas quilt for this year . The patterns are very pretty and are free to be printed off. Thankyou Bunny .
Earlier today my son rang, "Are you alright he ask, Alison says you have not put anything on your blog for a few days " " Well not just at the moment " I replied . I was putting together these bookshelves that I bought from Ikea ,it was really a 2 person job ,but determination won the day .
The dresses hanging on the door , are sundresses made from pillowcases , They will be posted to America and from there posted on to South Africa for little girls , they also need shorts for boys.

Flag cushions

On the blog of , Jenny of Elefantz , is a tutorial of how to make a flag cushion . I have made quite a few of these cushions for friends . Here are 2 of them . To see Jenny,s tutorial

Some People!!!

A deli, shop opened in the village where I live . Eager anticipation by people who wanted to purchase lovely food that is different to the usual .
Two weeks ago I ask for cheesecake ,reply , Oh no we might not be able to sell it then it would be wasted .
Today , I ask for Pate, no we haven,t any . To say I was surprised would be puttng it mildly . They just had about 6 different sorts of cheese . and some ham.
These people !! do they think they are going to have a business in 6 months time .?. I would say christmas is coming , people will be looking for luxuries .How can a business with this attitude survive . Would I be wrong to say it needs Quiche , flans , cheesecakes, Pate,s , Gateau,s Pasta salads etc,. I will not be shopping there .
NOW FOR SOMETHING ELSE
Does anyone know where I can purchase the fabric that you sew on and then steam to shrink . It is something new,no one seems to know it,s proper name Shrinking fabric????

using every minute ,filling every day

On Friday bluebell and I went to the fabric guild , I purchased just a few neccesary bits and then on arriving home found I hadn,t bought the very fabric I went for . I want to do the quilt Snowbound , it has been a block of the month . I needed a pale blue pinspot for the background sqs , I phoned the fabric guild this morning , it,s coming in the post .If you love fabric it is a veritable aladdins cave . www.fabricguild.co.uk
we also called at the garden centre , I bought 2 climbing roses a tray of violas and 2 white cyclaman , and 2 hanging baskets with violas in , the baskets £2.50 each ! wonderful . I put the plants in when I arrived home , it was very damp and murky ,perfect for planting . After putting in the roses I swept the gravel around them to keep the moisture in , Oh ! thought , I have swept a big piece of grey rock on to the rose , I bent down and picked it up , it was a rather large dead mouse , eeek .
Yesterday I thought I,ll just look at one blog only , I settled for Exhuberent colour because she had just posted , I won,t tell how long I stayed on that blog . I looked at so much , it really is so good and very interesting .
Today bluebell and I went for a browse at an antique centre . I did intend to sew this afternoon but a basket of stuff waiting to be ironed took longer than anticipated so sadly no sewing .

Help with a capital H

I have had a lovely day , came home , decided to do a bit of blog hopping only to find nothing is coming up on my dashboard .. I read a few days ago about someone else having this problem and that they had lost their friends also .

What to do now ,mmmm .

Down with the knitting pins , outwith the sewing needles

I have been knitting as a change from sewing . I knitted 4 cardigans for 2 two year olds in my family , I forgot to photograph the first cardigans . It made a change from quilting .
A red one for River and a pink one for Ellie .
Now , off to the post office with my parcel .
I have a problem with my eyesight . On Monday bluebell took me to the low vision clinic . They were such helpful and kind people .
I came home with 3 magnifiers , asmall pocket sized one for reading tags and packets in shops, a hand held one and one to place round my neck for sewing . I was also shown how to magnify the sreen on my laptop . I also came away with 8 large print books to read .
That wasn,t the end of the afternoon . To get to the Vista clinic we travelled through a part of the city I have lived in for most of my life , but have not been in those parts for many years . What a revelation !!! I thought I was in another country , I was looking all around me in amazement ,
We passed 3 mosques , people were being called to prayers It is obviosly a highly residential muslim community . Perhaps instead of foriegn climes I should explore my own home town .

The sun is also shining, what more could one want ? I,m happy .I,ll feel even happier when I have finished my knitting , I,m almost there but isn,t the front bands and collars and sewing up where the enthusiasm starts to wane .
Embroidery the next project with crochet for alternative finger excercises .

Life is wonderful

Last Thursday I flew to Scotland to visit Silver Sewer and her husband , not by my own wings I hasten to add .I didn,t get off to a good start, the plane was 2 hrs late due to a hold up in France, then another short delay while we waited for a thunder storm to pass .
When I finally reached my destination and saw my hosts in the airport waiting for me I felt so sorry , they looked so cold but after warm kisses and hugs all was well .
I had the most wonderful 3 days . I was treated with love and kindness , lovely food , hot water bottles in my Oh! so comfortable bed and great magazines to browse before I went to sleep.
We went to the Edinburgh quilt show and then the next day to see the most amazing display of tapestry relating to the battle of Bonnie prince Charlie and the Redcoats . 104 panels each a metre long, . I believe they were worked between the end 2009 and july this year . (forgive me if I,m wrong) but in about 8 months , I was awestruck . If the display ever comes to where you are able to see it do go. It is called Prestapans Tapestry .
We went to a very nice place for hot chocolate and the most delicious scone I have eaten recently .
The only aspect of Scotland I had before this trip was in T,V films e,g Rebus and Taggart . I was apprehensive but where Silver sewer lives it is beautiful . Wide open spaces and the Sea! One day we went into North Berwick , it is all so magical . a great little town, It all cast a spell over me .
I have always yearned fo Cyprus but Scotland knocked it into a cocked hat .
I discovered or was introduced to scotch pies , Wow !! I have looked up the recipe on the internet , no problem there , I,ll have a go .
The evening before I came away I mentioned to S,sewers husband that my maiden name is BAIRD , a good old scottish surname , That really gave me street cred,. Silver sewers husband is a scot .
I came home very happy and relaxed . Thankyou mine hosts , I love you both .

catch up

I have been so busy I don,t know where the time has gone . I cannot even think what I have been doing .
But yesterday while pottering in the garden I cut these poppy seed heads and gave them a coat of very pale lilac emulsion , they are now added to an arrangement and very nice they look too . I think it,s difficult to say which is best ,the actual poppies or the seed heads .

they are so beautiful, this is the top of one

This is them in the arrangement

Update

By sheer chance I started to read the current blogs being published , yesterday I put a site on my blog saying if you are inerested in embroidery to take a look but it was a no, no .
I have just noticed this lady has put a blog on a short while ago , it is titled contemporary embroidery the correct blog is---http://karenruane.blogspot.com --------- if you click on her side bar there are some very interesting sites

Well matured

For my tea yesterday I opened a jar of chutney I made last summer , it was so delicious I could have eat it with a spoon out of a sundae dish .
Yesterday I was able to buy 4 sweetcorn for a £1 so now I,m going to make sweetcorn chutney , I don,t have a recipe , I find making chutney is using what you have , this is how I will go about it .
3 sweetcorn cobs
1 eating apple
1 large bramley
a small marrow
a large onion
4 cloves garlic
mustard
white vinegar
white sugar
a small amount of celery
some grated fresh ginger

Boil it all together until softened and thick , put it into jars when cold , stash it away until christmas.

Paying a visit

I find I have not wrote on my blog since the beginning of the month . I have not been away but I have been busy and also a few ups and downs in my daily life , every one has ups and downs but I don,t usually take them seriously, simply becauase they are not serious , just little set backs and inconveniences.
I,m showing the beautiful goldfish I had nurtured and brought through the last very hard winter . About 10 days ago a heron took 7 of them . For a few days I was so sad , I still am ,they were so friendly I was really fond of those fish . I thought the heron had taken the lot but bluebell suggested we clean the pond and replensh it . This we did and to our surprise found 3 fish hiding in the plants .Very frightened .
Off we go to the aquatic centre . The size of the fish I had lost were £15 each . No , I was not going to pay that , I,m not saing they were not worth the money . They are .
I decided to have small babies and watch them grow as I had my lost ones . After lunch at the centre I came home with the plastic bag and my new fish .
I was apprehensive about putting them with older fish but up to now all seems well ..It was funny watching them . For a few days they swam in a little gang close to the big fish . The big fish didn,t seem to mind . Then it was if the bigger fish had enough of these tiddlers hanging on and chased them round a bit . I thought , this is it the little ones will be frightened ,but no , they are o,k . feeding well and not tagging on to the bigger ones any more . A happy ending to that little saga .
I have catarrh which also caused earache , headache and the discomfort that goes with it but not an excuse for not blogging . I have been cruising blogs and really enjoyed looking at blogs I had not read before . If you like embroidery in an arty way take a look at this and also other blogs on the side bar of it. http://dogdaisycharms.blogspot.com I personally am always amazed at what other people do . At present I,m knitting garments ready for winter , so much more warmth in hand knitted sweaters and cardigans and they last and wash much better than shop bought stuff .
My next big hurdle is I,m tavelling to Scotland on the 23rd of this month to visit Silver Sewer . The hurdle is I have booked my flight on the internet , I have to print off my boarding pass and then confirm my flight . I have never done this before and to say I,m very unsure is an understatement .

More tat and a bird sropping

Isn,t this sweet ? I bought it for £1 when bluebell and I went to the antiques centre on bank holiday Monday ,
I can just hear my family groaning more tat . To me it is a little treasure . I don,t collect tat .

This little golden gem is a dropping from the bird seed feeder . I pulled lots out but this one came up in clematis .

P.Cs

I thought you might like to see another pair of pillowcases that will be winging their way across the pond .

Getting the hang of it

That is the problem !!! I ,M NOT getting the hang of it . I,m referring to my last post . I keep trying to flex the muscles in my posterior , but my knees twitch instead .

Fascination

I spend a lot of time alone at weekends but quite happily I hasten to add .
Yesterday I decided to go to the town . While waiting at the bus stop, there was just a girl and myself , the girl was in front of me wearing gladiator shoes, black tight leggings , and a tight jumper that came just below her bottom .
Now here comes the answer to those unwanted inches !!
She was vigoriously flexing the muscles in her bum !! talk about rabbits in a sack !!! I tried it , I couldn,t even get going
