A Fishy Tale

This afternoon bluebell took me to the garden centre for some herb plants , we didn't see any . One of our garden centre haunts has had a massive revamp and an even more massive extension . As I said to bluebell " we could have a weeks holiday here ,any more walking and we would have been beside the sea . Thing is the prices have gone up massivly too .I bought a heavy trellis support for an Albertine Rose .

While there I called in the fish section for pool plants . I bought 3 . Last year a Heron took 7 of my fish . I had 2 left of the original and bought 6 more . This year the fish dive under the pump when I go near . I had a word with the man in charge about this happening . His comment is the original fish that escaped being eaten by the heron will always be nervous now and they will have passed that on the new fish . what a carry on , buying fish food and plants and not having the pleasure of watching the fish feed . the previous fish came to the corner 9 o/clock each morning to feed .

Albertine is one of my very favourite old roses. I'm sure she will look lovely in the garden.

We get visits from herons at this time of year when their youngsters are fledging and when the heron has been around the fish do become very wary of shadows on the water. But mine get over it in a couple of weeks and once again come when I call them to be fed. Is your pond small enough to be netted over during March/April and May? Because that would safeguard the fish as herons don't like to land on water, they prefer to walk into it.

After the visit from the Heron my neighbour gave me 2 new black nets ,they have been stretched across the pond since that time .--cottonreel

We had an enormous fish dropped into the middle of our street last year by a heron. My neighbour put it in her bath until we found the owner. ! xx

I have a heron visit my pond occasionally. I strung several lengths of fishing line over the pond. It keeps the heron away but also gives the plants a chance to grow normally and because it is clear it disappears from view.
